Thank you for this Tuesday’s lesson. I’m beginning to believe that “modernization” actually happened in the Taisho, not in the Meiji as was my former impression. Your posts have shown me that while changes were initiated in the Meiji, they were reacted to in the Taisho .Reaction is where real change occurs. Keep the lessons coming, Professor!

It's probably worth reiterating (it's been a few posts) that I am talking about "Greater Taishō" here. So 1905 is fuzzy. Is it Meiji or is it Taishō? Technically the Meiji Emperor was still reigning. That said, I think your point is on the money. I have claimed the riot for the Taishō period for exactly the reason you give - this reaction to Meiji modernization is where the change occurred.

Such a powerful article that speaks against stereotypical representations of Japan. The narrative of protest and mobilization of the people is resonant. Through each history lesson you provide, I am developing a new frame of reference, not only for history, but for the times we live in today. Thank you so much Dr. Patterson.
