Bricolage: A Field of Cultural Production
Maybe I have a thing for alliterative and rhyming names. My name is, after all, Pat Patterson. So I hereby dedicate this blog to one of my professional heroes, Marc Bloch, in whose shadow I hope someday to be worthy to stand. Hey - a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Except this is not a beginning.
It is more of a bridge. I’ve been writing for many years, and now I feel like it is time to go public. I am a historian concerned mostly with Modern Japan, Transnational Popular Culture, and Historiography. I’ve written on the popular music industry in early twentieth-century Japan, and on more contemporary music and pop culture trends. I’ve also dabbled a bit in fiction.
In this community I will put forward my views, my research, and some of the things I am reading on the topics mentioned above, and on other things that strike my fancy as time goes on. Mostly this is a space where I will be making short, pithy cultural and historical commentary, and I hope to find a few others who share my interests and can help me sharpen my own observations.
All Things Cultural History
I’m a cultural historian, an analog refugee from the digital universe, but I’ve decided to dip my toe in here to find out whether others share my interests. I am mostly looking at history before the mid-twentieth century, but I won’t limit the scope of my reveries to any specific subject or time period. If you are up for a journey - especially into the cultures and ideas of the early twentieth century, and particularly in Asia, then please join me here.
My posting plan
I am an inveterate procrastinator, but I plan to post weekly. You should be able to find new posts here on Tuesday mornings - thoughts to go along with your morning coffee on what I experience as the most difficult day of every week. I figure that getting motivated to post on Tuesday mornings will take some serious effort. I hope the results of that effort will inspire you to have a good day! If all else fails, well, at least you’ll have your coffee.
